Raspberry Pi OS • RPi OS Lite 64 bit does not boot on 3B+

I'm trying to install the latest RPi OS Lite 64 bit image (dated July 4th 2024) on a rpi 3B+ (brand new rpi and brand new sd card)

I downloaded the image, un x-zipped it, and imaged it to a sd card with dd (in linux). Booting the RPI 3B+ from the card fails almost immediately when it's trying to expand the filesystem, complaining about incompatible binary executables. It then promptly kernel panics and that's the end of that!

The image claims to support RPI 3B+, but it doesn't seem to actually support that board. I'm guessing not a lot of people are using 3B+ boards any more, so maybe no one else noticed?

I guess I'm going to try the 32 bit lite image instead... edited to add: the 32 bit version boots properly, resizes the partition, sets up the ssh keys, and reboots properly - there's definitely something wrong with the 64 bit lite image on the 3B+
