Thank you all. I had some time to digest but I'm still stuck Image may be NSFW.

PINN and other boot GUIs seem hard and too complex for me; I'll also be updating the SSD OS often by flashing ready-made retropie/batocera backups and images, so the setup is evolving over time.
I'd like to simplify this as much as possible. I'm thinking of two approaches for this:
1) Autoboot.
Can I have Autoboot.txt on the sdcard on the original raspbian OS boot partition, or does it need its partition?
How do you create a small partition after having installed raspbian on the sdcard?
Does Autoboot allow selecting partitions residing on the both sdcard AND on the external SSD?
2) Programmatically change the boot order sdcard/ssd and ssd/sdcard.
I could run a script from Raspbian which changes the boot order to ssd/sdcard when wanting to boot into Retropie, and changes it back automatically to sdcard/ssd once booted into Retropie. Is this doable?
The main bootable device is the sdcard with raspbian OS, there's then a non-bootable external HDD for media, and a bootable SSD with retropie or batocera (which will be updated frequently).
The idea is to boot into the sdcard OS by default, as it's going to be what I use 90% of the time.
When wanting to play, I could boot the sdcard as normal and run a script to reboot into Retropie on the external SSD. When booting Retropie, an automated script will change things so that at the next reboot it'll boot back the sdcard.
Thanks again
