Raspberry Pi OS • Chromium not detecting dark mode preference

Hey folks.

For the past couple of days I've been maining a Raspberry Pi 5 16GB on Raspberry Pi OS (64bit, Full) with the stock desktop environment. I have a preference for dark mode, so have set the option in System Settings -> Preferences -> Appearance Settings -> Theme -> Dark.

It seems the inbuilt Chromium browser doesn't detect this preference, and so the prefers-colour-scheme css rule on websites doesn't work. In Firefox however, it does.

Does anyone know of a workaround at the destopp level? For the time being I'm using the Dark Reader browser extension, but for when I'm working on my own web projects, I can only test dark mode CSS in Firefox, whereas Chromium and it's dev tools are my preference.

I'm aware that in chrome://flags you can play with "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents", but each of the settings there seem to mess with image rendering or otherwise overriding stylesheet colours. I know this because I've tested it against my own dark-supported website. I've tried switching PiXNoir to Adwaita-dark in

Code:

lxappearance
and changing Chromium's theme to GTK / QT and back to Classic also but to no avail.

This might be something to raise with Raspberry Pi's desktop team, but I'm not sure the best way to reach out to them. Is bookworm-feedback the appropriate repo?

Thanks for any help.
