I suspect if you flip back to X11, it will work as you expect. Bookworm + X11 + MATE is fabulous and offers the same user experience as Bullseye + X11 + MATE

Wayland/Wayfire seems to have a lot of gottchas for something that has been worked on for a long time ( am talking about general Wayland/Wayfire development, not RPLs Wayland/Wayfire development). I am completely willing to accept and even expect that things will be different. However it is annoying when you encounter something, that you take for granted and (a) it doesn't just work and (b) there is no easy to find how-to informing you of what you need to do to make it work.

I am sure extended desktops works under Wayland with some of the compositors. The trick is figuring out if it exists in Wayfire or if you need to switch to a different compositor. As Peter suggested, I suspect one of the Wayfire plug-ins may allow it. By default all the "base" plugins are enabled (I think). The "extra" plugins are not complied in RPiOS's version of Wayfire (and are a right pita to add). how focus follows mouse is not considered a base option is my pet peeve.

It might also be the way Wayfire is designed, as some treat each monitor as a separate workspace and you cannot merge workspaces or have an app lurk in multiple workspaces. There are other compositors/DEs out there that play with Wayland and allow extended workspaces across multiple monitors. I think Gnome and KDE both have "normal" extended desktops with Wayland.
