The drive has default block size of 4096 bytes (from cat /sys/block/sda/queue/physical_block_size)
I tried "-b 8192" and it now has started OK. The estimated run time is in days which I expected.
It never occurred to me to try a blocksize larger than 8K. I wish I had now.
All the comments say that badblocks is vestigial but I can't find any obvious replacement so I will soldier on.
