Here's another interesting thing:- it seems that if I move the mouse QUICKLY across the boundary of terminal window and desktop, it is more likely to go to the correct pointer and will stay like that until I cross another window boundary.
Not just terminal, various windows, like pcmanfm, and a few others I tried, with all of them, when I cross a window boundary line, the pointer might change from the odd block to the correct pointer.
So it seems there is an issue with window boundaries.

tried. sudo apt install raspberrypi-ui-mods --reinstall no change noticeable
