Raspberry Pi OS • Bookshelf "no subdomain specified" issue

I can see and download Bookshelf titles, but when double-clicking a downloaded title (can see it as a PDF in the Bookshelf directory)
get and error message that says 'no subdomain specified'.

I've searched for articles describing this and thought I'd found the answer, but the instruction start talking about Audiobookshelf config files which don't exist for me.
