An original Zero (not a Zero2) cannot run Debian armhf packages, because they require an ARMv7 CPU. Depending on how critical the package is, just installing the Debian version could break the whole system.
Debian armel could work, but it is suboptimal because it uses software emulation for floating point. Also, since your existing Raspbian system is armhf, you would need to enable multiarch support. I am not sure how practical that is.
