No joy I am afraid. Your recommended and my previous setup produce the same results. In the meanwhile, I discovered the problem occurs only over VNC (RealVNC and other, with physical keyboard on Windows or soft keyboard on Android). This is a headless RPi.
The problem disappears when I connect the keyboard to the RPi's USB port and keep the rest of the headless setup as is. It seems that the key codes are misinterpreted over VNC. Thanks for trying though.
