"Vuescan" is a chargeable scanning application, for many scanners and multiple platforms: https://www.hamrick.com/
I use it, and it works very well, especially as often older scanners get "dropped" from support. I know that:
1. Vuescan allows you to program the functions on the buttons on the front of most(?) scanners
and
2. Vuescan claims to work on a Pi... https://www.hamrick.com/blog/raspberry-pi.html
- but I haven't tried it on a Pi myself. (I use a Mac for that.) HTH
