This may not be related/helpful to your current problem but may prove useful later.....
When I installed gtk-emacs on Trixie on a Pi5 I found it unusable due to lots of screen corruption when scrolling through a file.
Some Googleing pointed me at the pgtk-emacs package that is built to use native Wayland (rather than via Xwayland). This solved my problems.
