Raspberry Pi OS • "Error looking up passwd struct for uid 1000: Input/output error"

Hello,
I run a Raspberry Pi 5 with RasPiOS (Bullseye>Bookworm>Trixie) as a desktop computer for my home office and internet. The computer had been running without any problems on a USB SSD since October 2023. At the beginning/middle of November 2025, I updated from Bookworm to Trixie (both desktops run on Wayland/Labwc). Since the update, the Raspberry Pi 5 has been freezing sporadically. Sometimes the computer runs for a day or two without this error, and on other days it freezes twice an hour.

It is always the same error message: ‘Error looking up passwd struct for uid 1000: Input/output error’.
After that, no more commands can be issued, although text can still be written within the respective CLI window.
Various forum posts suggest that the error is due to read errors from the SSD.
This means that it is not possible to access the passwd file.

My findings regarding the error pattern:
The error only occurs when the Linux GUI (Wayland in this case) is installed, but not when a minimal graphics-free system (core/light/lite) is used.
The error occurs on two different USB SSDs, on a USB hard drive and on the inserted microSDHCs.
None of these drives are defective. The data carriers show no errors in all physical error searches (memory test software).

All os installation was done by the SD Card Copier of RasPiOS.

After all these attempts to track down the error, I went back to Bookworm (Wayland/Labwc).
The error no longer occurs here. All data carriers are ‘suddenly’ fully functional again.

Does anyone else have the same problem?
What has changed in terms of this error behaviour in RaspiOS between Bookworm and Trixie?
Does anyone know of a solution for updating the Raspberry Pi 5 from Bookworm to Trixie without this sporadic error?
I have an early version of the Raspberry Pi 5. Are there any known incompatibilities with the latest RasPiOS version?

I would be very grateful for any information on this matter. At some point, I would like to update to Trixie again.

Best regards.
