Many thanks for all the advice. Upgrading the same system from Bookworm to Trixie resulted in an operational system, but still with a Debian desktop. I remain mystified as to what it is that produces a Debian rather than Pi desktop. I'd like to think there was some package or configuration that would fix this.
I gave up and installed Trixie afresh. That looks and runs OK. It took me many days to reinstall the complex software setup I had. Simply copying files across wasn't enough due to major system changes between OS versions. That's why I had hoped to avoid a fresh install. Anyway, I'm back to where I was. Thanks!
