One way to address the lag between the creators of rpi-imager version and the version that a distro's apt tool offers is the use of a Personal Package Archive (PPA). I have seen and used this with other projects such as KiCad, see https://www.kicad.org/download/linux-distros/ as an example.
You go thru the one time hassle of adding the PPA but after that "apt update" gets you the actual latest version, not the distro's outdated version.
