Raspberry Pi OS • Bookworm backquote (solved)

Hi, all.
I recently installed Bookworm. 1 thing thatś driving me up the wall is that in order to enter a backquote (´`´) I have to press the backquote key twice. (In typing that sentence, I discovered that to type tick (´´´) I have to press tick twice, too.)
Please, how can I set it so that I only have to type backquote (and tick) once to get the relevant character?
(I do a lot of compiling under Emacs. The command to move to an error is control-x backquote.)
Edit: Itś all coming out of the woodwork: I´ve got the same problem with caret (´^´).
Another edit: I ran `sudo raspi-config` and told it I wanted my right 'alt' key (which, on this keyboard, is labelled 'alt') to be 'AltGr'. (Not that I do.) This didn't immediately fix it but rebooting did (not that raspi-config told me I'd need to reboot).
