Well one reboot for a pitstop later, swapping out the cheap £1 mouse from poundland for another cheap £1 mouse from poundland, also bought more than five years ago, seems to have got it to sane behaviour. Consider for example text select while the leftmouse button is held down. The other mouse was instead sending erratic click-click-cliketty-click from a shaky button contact, and likewise messed with window resize or anything else which might depend on the duration of a mousebuttonhold or do something else when a shaky contact in a mouse button goes click clck clickkety click.
The bad news is that nothing in poundland is £1 any more. Perhaps they need a new name? Any suggestions ?
