Then things reverted to normal: I was 2:48 into your explanatory video when I was interrupted. Some hours later I'm posting this. I really do want to take you up on your offer. sdm seems ideal. I simply can't commit atm. :-|
Re the video: it's a few years old, and sdm has had MAJOR improvements since then, but it still explains the basic concepts and features.

As far as your script, it really doesn't look horrible, just a lot of spaghetti that will benefit from sdm.

I'll heave-ho back my "loose interpretation/reimplementation" of this in the next day or two, focusing on the actual things that you're doing to customize, and ignoring those things that a) don't seem to be customization-relevant (e.g., all the help text, etc), or b) things that make me go: "WTF is THIS for?"
Re (b): You're not the only one! :-)

Re (a): I had no clear plan. I'd never needed to repeatedly install images until I bought a batch of rpiZ/rpiZW way back which I needed to come up headless. That was about the only time I sat down and thought about it. There are hints of sanity regarding the udisksctl routines for example. The help options are actually the order in which I originally wrote the parts. I only ever use "--all" and "--post". Much time passed then I started to need to write normal rpi images .. so just fudged stuff in.

Three weeks for me to reply. On the plus side, this isn't the end, but with yesterday out the way (herding cats), it may be the end of the beginning. :-)
