For instance, my standard demo password is "P@$$w0rd", but I tell users to use something like "Pa55w0rd" instead, at least at first.
That is a very American localised password. The @ and " signs move and the $$ becomes a ££ if you set things up for a UK keyboard.

Use A-Z and 0-9 ONLY, that's just about guaranteed to work unless you're using a French or German keyboard.
Yes, I mentioned that. That's why that password is used in my example. You can, in fact, lock yourself out if you choose a password that you can't type before the localization settings kick in. I'm specifically calling that out in my tutorials. The point is that this behavior seems to have changed. I haven't had to think about this in years, but suddenly the problem is back. I swear I haven't seen this issue since Stretch or Buster. I could be wrong, but it sure seems to me like this problem had vanished until I moved to Bookworm.
