Raspberry Pi OS • Re: Messing around with "overscan". A blast from the past.

Code:

disable_overscan=0
Now, I want to verify that I understand this correctly. That means to not disable overscan, which means it does overscan, right? So, how does that lead to the presence of the "black border"?
Old TVs overscan (produce an image larger than the display, so edges of image are not visible)
Treat disable_overscan=1 as disable overscan compensation.
i.e. output an image with a black border, so the edges of the image that can't be seen are just the black border.

But this is a workaround. The correct solution is to disable overscan *on the TV*.
(Almost all TV's from the last decade will allow this, but the naming of the menu option varies widely).
And, if I change it to =1, will that make the border go away?
Yes.
And, as mentioned above, I would like to do this change w/o rebooting.
I'd expect so (but we are talking about software from many years ago - if all bits are from the right era, then maybe).
