Raspberry Pi OS • Can't edit fstab file on different pi system

I edited the /etc/fstab file per some instructions that cause my RPi5 to die. It doesn't boot to a usable screen at all, just a "you're in emergency mode...hit enter to continue." I hit enter and it displays the same message.

So, first thought, I pulled the SD card, dropped it into a reader and hooked it up to my RPi4. I can see the rootfs directory tree and can navigate it. I CANNOT edit the fstab file. I get an input/output error. I also get the same error when I try to access other directories like /var/spool. I'm sure it's a permissions issue, but the chown commands display the same error even with sudo.

I also put the SD card into a reader on a Windows machine with DiskInternals Linux Reader, but as the name says, I can only read the files on the SD card. I could "export" the fstab file to the Windows machine, but I have no way to put it back there.

So, I'm at a loss. I want to edit the fstab file to remove what I did and then stick it back into the Pi5. How can I do that either in the Pi5 somehow, or in one of my other machines: Pi4, Windows11.

TIA
