Raspberry Pi OS • Re: Can't edit fstab file on different pi system

I edited the /etc/fstab file per some instructions that cause my RPi5 to die. It doesn't boot to a usable screen at all, just a "you're in emergency mode...hit enter to continue." I hit enter and it displays the same message.

So, first thought, I pulled the SD card, dropped it into a reader and hooked it up to my RPi4. I can see the rootfs directory tree and can navigate it. I CANNOT edit the fstab file. I get an input/output error. I also get the same error when I try to access other directories like /var/spool. I'm sure it's a permissions issue, but the chown commands display the same error even with sudo.

A permissions error would be reported as such.

For more help I suggest you post:
  • How you're mounting the root partition (no, in a card reader isn't what I mean)
  • How are you viewing and navigating the directory tree?
  • The exact command(s) you're using to edit the file
  • The exact error message(s) you're getting.
  • What you're using to power the 4B and whether you have any power hungry devices connected to it.
  • Whether the card reader is directly connected to the Pi or via a USB hub.
One possibility is that between you viewing/navigating the file tree and you trying to open fstab the reader is disconnecting. The meta data (file tree) has been cached by whatever program you're using but when you try to access the file's contents it is no longer there.
