Squeekboard is designed to work well with Wayland, which is the default display server in recent Raspbian OS versions.
After installation, you'll likely need to enable it through the system settings.
Click on the Raspberry Pi icon (menu) in the top-left corner of your screen.
Go to Preferences -> Raspberry Pi Configuration.
In the Raspberry Pi Configuration tool, navigate to the Display tab.
You should see options for the "On-screen keyboard." You can choose:
Enabled always: The virtual keyboard will always be accessible via an icon on the top panel.
Enabled if touchscreen found: The keyboard will only appear when a touchscreen is detected.
Disabled: The virtual keyboard won't be accessible.
"Enabled always" is often a good choice if you want consistent access, even if you sometimes use a physical mouse.
