Raspberry Pi OS • nm-applet fails to start on bookworm

RPi 5 running bookworm, fully up-to-date:

$ nm-applet
(nm-applet:2390): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 15:04:18.738: unable to send notifications through org.freedesktop.Notifications: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Notifications was not provided by any .service files

The shell then hangs and does not return to a prompt until ^C. What am I missing?
