It may have been obvious from the command shown, but I am not running a desktop environment on the PI. Instead, I am remotely connected via X11 forwarding. nm-applet is part of the network-manager-gnome package. Does that imply that the program cannot be used in my situation? Most other graphical programs, including many Gnome programs, do run so I would be very disappointed if this one won't.
