Thanks to you both for your help!
@kerry_s: I got gnome-core working on trixie lite, and both displays light up and appear to work. I had to find the settings to rotate the touch display to landscape, but no big deal.
However, the gnome-core I got from the repository defaulted to Wayland. I tried exporting "GDK_BACKEND=x11" but that didn't work. Then I discovered a page that said I needed to "apt install xorg" which I did. After some tweaking to the devilspie2 configuration everything seems to work.
BUT I noticed on one of the many gnome-related sites (https://discourse.gnome.org/t/deprecate ... kend/30510) that the X11 backend is deprecated, and will be removed in GTK 5. Sigh....
So at some point I will bite the bullet and try to figure out the labwc configuration XML that @cillian64 pointed me to.
This has been quite a saga. Thanks again for your help. This is a great community.
