ideally you want to install the lite version and then kde on top.
wayland is still a toss, even i'm running X11 instead. switching to another desktop is not going to improve wayland, it's still the same wayland, your going to have the same issues.
but if you already have sddm & kde installed on top of what you have now, what you can do is ssh in and remove lightdm(sudo apt purge --remove lightdm) then reboot, sddm should load but i recommend you set sddm to auto login or your going to get stuck after the reboot.
